WHEN QUIET RELEASES CREATIVITY

4 BLANK WALLS

FINDING MY CREATIVE SPACE

Sometimes I feel like I need 4 blank walls, pen and paper, a remote island, and a lock to be able to focus and come up with my own thoughts and ideas. A place that I can fill my mind from within rather than from what I am consuming on a screen, listening to, or even driving down the road. Today I found my space. My 4 blank walls.

DEEP WORK

I’ve been reading a book called Deep Work by Cal Newport. It has been inspiring and has also helped me feel that I may not be alone in finding the space to truly be creative. In a world full of life, and the distractions that come with that gift, making the time and finding a physical place to think deeply is a challenge.

Shallow work is checking emails, answering text messages, scrolling for ideas. Things that keep our lives running, but also keep us from dipping deep into our own wells of creativity and mindfulness.

“Deep work, though a burden to prioritize, was crucial for his goal of changing the world.” - Cal Newport about Carl Jung

FOUND

I love so much about my life - my family, my work, the mountains that I live by, gardening, reading, and even all of my distractions. But it’s here, in this quiet, with no phone, computer, or conversation that I can sit down and think.

I’ve tried for weeks to make myself write even one blog post. I have sat looking at the computer screen, I’ve checked hundreds of emails, I have found any shallow distraction I could to fill the void I was trying to pull from. I wondered if I even had anything useful to say.

Now, in a peaceful, purposeful quiet…in 5 min…I have put pen to paper and am done. This space I’m in…this quiet that prevails…this is where I am filled. I will be here again soon.

Where is your quiet space?
